This information is
being distributed in an effort to clarify the actions of the Ottawa County
Sheriff in the event a Snow Emergency is declared.
Pursuant to Ohio Revised Code Section 311.07/.08, as interpreted by the
Ohio Attorney General (Opinion No. 97-015/86-023), the Sheriff may declare a
snow emergency and temporarily close county and township roads within his
jurisdiction. Any person who knowingly hampers or fails to obey a lawful order
of the Sheriff declaring a snow emergency and temporarily closing county and
township roads for the duration of the snow emergency may be subject to
criminal prosecution under ORC 2917.13.
Level 1: ROADWAY ADVISORY
Roadways are hazardous with
blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be icy. Drive very cautiously.
Level 2: ROADWAY WARNING
Roadways are hazardous with
blowing and drifting snow. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should
be out on the roadways. Contact your employer to see if you should report to
work.
Level 3: ROADWAY EMERGENCY
All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be out during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roadways may subject themselves to arrest.
