Have you marked your items?

Burglary is the most frequent crime committed in the United States. Are you concerned that one day you may the victim of a burglary, or perhaps you have already faced that. If so, I encourage you to join Operation Identification. It's very easy to do and will save you a lot of energy and aggravation should your home ever get broken into and your property stolen.

This program involves marking your property with an identifying number, like your drivers license number as a means of discouraging burglary and theft. The use of an engraver, permanent marker or paint stick can be used to write the ID number on you property (For example, write your ID number on the back of your television set by the serial number.)

No one will be able to see the engraving or written information, but if your property is stolen and the thief attempts to pawn the item, or the police find stolen property, there is a greater likelihood your property will be returned to you. Marked property is difficult for a burglar to dispose of or resell, as it can be traced back to the owner. If a burglar is caught with marked property, it is solid evidence of possession of stolen property.

If you have items that cannot be marked, such as jewelry, take a photo of those items so you can identify them as yours if recovered after a burglary. After marking your property, you should make a list of your valuables and keep in a safe place. If you should become a victim of a burglary you will be able to quickly describe the stolen property from your list.
