Mortar Found in Harris Township, July 14, 2007

On Saturday, July 14, 2007 at 3:24PM Mr. Paul Blausey of 3334 Dischinger Road in Elmore called the Sheriffs Office and reported he found what he described as a World War II bomb on his property. Deputy Kevin Meek was dispatched to the call and inspected the object. It was located along the bank of Sugar Creek just west of the Dischinger Road bridge.

The Northwest Ohio Bomb Squad from Toledo was called to the scene. They also inspected the object and found that material was leaking from the inside and that the detonating pin was exposed. They determined the object, described as a 60 millimeter mortar, was too dangerous to move from its present location and that it should be destroyed in place. The bomb squad dug a hole and placed an explosive charge over the mortar. The charge was detonated and the mortar was destroyed.

At this time neither Mr. Blausey nor Sheriff Deputies know how the mortar may have come to this location. Mr. Blausey found it while walking in the area.
