'Stop Sticks' Purchased for Sheriffs Deputies

On Tuesday, March 28, 2006, the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office received fourteen sets of  'Stop Sticks'. Used during vehicle pursuits, Stop Sticks are devices, that when deployed across the roadway in front of a fleeing vehicle, puncture holes in the tires causing them to deflate in about 20 seconds. The fleeing vehicle will slow, causing less potential for injury to the suspect, deputies and citizens using the highways.

Five deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office have undergone training in the use of Stop Sticks and will be instructing the remaining deputies in their use. Once training is completed the Stop Sticks will be assigned to each patrol vehicle in the Sheriffs Office fleet.

The stop Sticks, costing $380 per set, were purchased with funds provided by the Ottawa County Commissioners, Sheriff Bratton and Ottawa County Prosecutor Mark Mulligan.
