NEWS RELEASE, MISSING BOATER

On Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 1:43PM the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office received a 911 call from a person on a sailboat who reported a man in the water and that they had lost sight of him. The initial location was in Lake Erie about 1 mile north of the entrance to the Portage River.

The Ottawa County Sheriffs Office Underwater Response Team, Ottawa County Sheriffs Office Marine Patrol, Port Clinton Police Marine Patrol, Port Clinton Fire Department and United States Coast Guard were all dispatched to the scene.

Missing at this time is: Gregory H. Shaw, age 64, 7685 Fishel Drive South, Dublin, Ohio.

Vessel: 1981 26 foot AMF Paceship sailboat, white.

Investigation revealed that Mr. Shaw had recently sold the sailboat to a third party. This morning Mr. Shaw, the captain of the vessel, took two persons, a nephew to the new owner who is out of state, and his mother, out on the boat. They departed from their dock at Brand's Marine on Lakeshore Drive. After entering the lake they were originally under sail but due to the increasing winds and waves Mr. Shaw began lowering the sails. He had started the engine and was intending to return to port under engine power. While lowering the sail a line attached to the jib sheet went under the boat and became tangled in the shaft and propeller which caused the engine to stall. Mr. Shaw went into the water with a knife intending to cut or untangle the line from the propeller. While attempting to do so a large wave separated Shaw from the boat. A short time later the persons on the boat lost sight of Mr. Shaw.

Weather: Winds: South-Southwest at 15-20 Knots, Waves 3-5 feet, water temperature not available at this time.

Other persons on sailboat:    Elizabeth J. Russell-Russ, age 56, Oil City Road, Wooster, Ohio

Kelly M. Russell, age 23, Oil City Road, Wooster, Ohio

A search of the area was conducted by the Sheriffs Office Marine Patrol, Port Clinton Marine Patrol and the United States Coast Guard, both by vessel and helicopter.

The boat was towed back to port by a commercial towing service to Brands Marina, 451 West Lakeshore Drive, Port Clinton, Ohio and removed from the water.

Initial reports indicate Mr. Shaw was an experienced sailor. There is no indication at this time that alcohol was involved.

The search of the area is continuing by the Coast Guard.

The case remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office.
