Charges Filed in False Abduction Report

On Monday, January 23, 2006 at 6:07AM the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office received a call from a security supervisor at the Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station in Carroll Township. The supervisor reported there was a victim at the facility that had possibly been involved in an abduction or carjacking situation. Carroll Township Police officers and Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to Davis Besse.

The victim, John Edward Grochowski, age 51, was interviewed by members of the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office and an agent from the Sandusky office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The victim reported he had been driving east on State Route 579 in Williston Ohio when he stopped after seeing a girl along the road. He reported at that time three males got into his vehicle and ordered him to drive. The victim stated one of the men had a gun and another tried to place a rope around his neck while they were driving. The victim, employed by a contractor working at the  Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station, drove to the power station where he knew there would be security officers. As they entered the facility the victim stopped his car at the vehicle inspection station, and the three men fled from his vehicle and ran through a parking lot.

Ottawa County Sheriff Deputies and Davis Besse security personnel searched the area. A helicopter from the Toledo Police Department was called to assist them. No suspects were ever located.

As the search continued Detective Joe Vidal and an agent from the FBI did a further interview with Grochowski. About 9:45AM Mr. Grochowski admitted to Detective Vidal and the FBI agent he had made a false report concerning all aspects of this case. He was taken to the Giving Tree for evaluation and was later brought to the Ottawa County Detention Facility, charged with two criminal offenses and incarcerated.
