SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR LOCAL BREAK-IN's
On Sunday, December 19, 2004 at approximately 9:30PM the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office received a report of two vehicles being entered that were parked in the Knoll Crest Plaza in Portage Township. Each vehicle had windows broken out and in one case some checks stubs were taken.
Shortly after deputies received a report that someone had attempted entry to the Radio Shack store located at 4046 East Harbor Road in the Knoll Crest Plaza. In that case someone attempted to enter the business by breaking the glass in the front door. The glass is constructed of double pane and only one pane was broken.
A short time later the Sheriffs Office received a report that an entry had been made at the Ottawa County Humane Society, 2424 East Sand Road. In that case a windows was broken out which allowed the persons involved to unlock the front door. A computer printer, copy machine and portable phone were taken from the office. No animals were released or injured.
As Deputy Sedlak was investigating the entry to the two vehicles he found a wallet that did not belong to the owner. There was identification and other documents in the wallet that identified the owner as Justin Salyers. The owner of the vehicle did not know Salyers and there was no reason for his wallet to have been in the vehicle.
Detective Sergeant Riedmaier was called to the scenes to look for possible evidence. Deputy Joseph Sedlak and Kent Davis began looking for Justin Salyers to determine why his wallet was found in the car. Deputies went to the Salyers residence at 2029 East State Road. As they approached the trailer where he lives they looked inside a vehicle that was parked in front. At that point deputies saw the printer, copy machine and telephone that had been reported stolen from the Humane Society. The vehicle, which is owned by Salyers grandmother, was impounded. Justin Salyers was not home at the time deputies were at his residence.
About 1:45AM the Sheriffs Office received information that Justin Salyers was home. Deputy Davis located him at his residence and placed him under arrest for breaking into the Humane Society. He was incarcerated in the Ottawa County Detention Facility after being charged with one count of Breaking and Entering, a felony of the fifth degree.
On Tuesday, December 20, 2004 at 10:19AM the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office received a report that Noah’s Ark, a pet store located at 2330 East Harbor Road in Portage Township, had been entered sometime the previous night or early this morning. Entry was made to that building by breaking a window. As Sergeant Jeff Hickman investigated that case he learned two parrots, valued at $1,200 each, had been taken from the business. Sergeant Hickman asked if the vehicle driven by Salyers was still impounded and asked that it be checked for any evidence relating to the theft of the parrots. The interior of the vehicle was checked and several feathers were found that were consistent with those belonging to a parrot. Detectives contacted Salyers grandmother and his wife and they confirmed that they did have two parrots in their trailer that appeared during the night. Neither woman was certain how the parrots got into their trailer or when. Detective Steve Levorchick took an employee of Noah’s Ark to the Salyers home and recovered the parrots. One of the birds may have a broken wing and will be taken to a veterinarian for examination and treatment.
Evidence collected in each case strongly links Justin Salyers to being the person responsible for both entries.
Justin Salyers has also been charged with a second count of Breaking and Entering, also a felony of the fifth degree, for the entry to the Noah’s Ark store. Other charges will likely be filed against Salyers for breaking into the vehicles and damage to the glass door at the Radio Shack store.
Ottawa County Sheriff Detectives will work with Port Clinton Police Detective Sergeant Mike Toney to see if there are any links between these cases and recent break-ins that occurred in the City of Port Clinton.
Charged: Justin L. Salyers, age 21
2029 East State Road, Port Clinton, Ohio
*Currently on probation from Ottawa County Common Pleas Court for drug related charges.
On Monday, December 20, 2004 Justin Salyers appeared in Ottawa County Municipal Court. Bond was set at $10,000 for both charges. He remains incarcerated in the Ottawa County Detention Facility.
