RE: Press Release
Inmate Escape
On Saturday, August 06, 2005, at 1:00 a.m., Port Clinton Police Officer Ellis Fuiava observed a vehicle operating with no headlights. Traffic stop was made within the City of Port Clinton. As Officer Fuiava approached the vehicle, the driver stated that he had just escaped from the Ottawa County Detention Facility. The individual was wearing an orange jumpsuit. The Port Clinton Police Department contacted the Corrections Division, and an immediate count was made of all inmates there.
On this same date at approximately 1:07 a.m., Officer Fuiava obtained the name of the individual. It was relayed to Corrections, and it was found that the individual had escaped from the Correctional Facility.
The investigation commenced as to what had taken place. Captain Steve Levorchick and Sheriff Robert Bratton responded to the Correctional Facility where a complete investigation had already started, now assisted by the Administration. It was found that the area in which the inmate was being detained was in an area of the Facility where there is a door to a fire exit. This door was examined, and it was found that there was a malfunction in the locking system. The inmate had utilized this door as his entry to the fire exit. He then shattered a window which was approximately 20’ off the ground. In doing so, the inmate cut both of his hands and then jumped out of the window.
The investigation will continue. Pending charges include escape, criminal damage, and auto theft. These charges will be reviewed with the Ottawa County Prosecutor on Monday, August 08.
The subject has been indicted on three counts of burglary. He was booked into the Ottawa County Correctional Facility on 06-10-05. The arrest was by the Carroll Township Police Department. Currently he is under a $30,000 cash bond. The inmate has been placed in lockdown and isolation.
