Safe, Strong & Free
Child Assault Prevention (CAP) addresses the issue of child abuse and neglect by
providing information to adults and children of Ottawa County to lessen their
vulnerability to abuse and neglect through education and awareness. CAP is
based on teaching children the realities of abuse and neglect so that they can
be better prepared to recognize and deal with potentially dangerous situations.
Whether those situations are sexual assaults, physical abuse, or bully
situations on the playground, the philosophy of CAP is to help children be less
vulnerable. The key to success lays in its foundation- its basic philosophy of
empowerment and positive reinforcement.
· CAP workshops help prevent child abuse and neglect through a three-pronged approach. School staff members, parents and future parents are offered programs which give them skills to recognize and report abuse along with strategies to use at home, in the classroom and in the community.
· Children’s workshops are offered to all Headstart Preschool programs, all first and fourth grade students and eighth grade students in Ottawa County.
· CAP is a nationally recognized program. The curriculum is research based. CAP is currently in 39 states and in 38 counties in Ohio. CAP has been translated into 7 languages including American Sign Language.
· CAP has 7 active volunteers. Volunteers are instrumental to the CAP program.
